Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Serena Mclane's P.O.V
The both of us trudge down the garden in silence as I gaze at his back.
Why would he come so soon? I expect he has more important work to do than to help me to move in with.
Just the thought of moving in with him leaves me slightly weary.
I barely know the guy.
Anything can happen.
And that's what I'm worried about but who wouldn't be? "Why did you come so soon?"
I find myself asking, "Not that I didn't want you to but I gather you have more important things to do."
I finish somewhat lamely.
Damien glances over his shoulder to look at me.
"I perceived you would rather I make this happen as soon as possible."
With that he turns around and fastens his pace.
Damien is sort of right about that.
There's this one part of me, that actually wants to go with him, to leave this place- more in particular, my fathers ever so watchful eye— and for all this to be just over and done with.
The other part of me, wants to stay here and wallow in my memories of what could have been.
I mean nearly everyone feels the same, don't they? I nod my head and go to thank him but just at that moment, he opens the door and enters into the house through the kitchens back door.My eyes immediately dart to my family standing in the middle and not even a moment later is my mother pulling me into her, hugging the life out of me.
Even Sarah joins in the hug while my mother coos various things in my ear.
However my father stands there rigidly, barely glancing at me.
By the time we all pull away, Damien has gone out to the front of the house.
Following behind him into the living room, I notice two people carrying the boxes from my bedroom and out of the house.
I peak my head out the front door only to see a black car standing right next to Damien's car where he himself is, tapping away on his phone.
Noticing me, he puts his phone away and comes over to me, where I stand in the entry way to talk to my father about certain things.
Once again, I say my goodbyes with plentiful of hugs from my mother and sister.
I turn to my father, not too sure on what to do however he answers for me by walking away.
My face falls at his actions but I quickly plaster on a fake smile.
Turning to Damien, I brighten my smile up a notch since I have a feeling he usually sees through all these little occurrences.
I'm apparently correct as Damien quickly scans my face but thankfully he doesn't say anything regarding it.
Finishing my final goodbyes, I soon find myself sitting in Damien's car as a lapse of silence greets us.
He's always so quiet.
"Thank you."
I say as the silence gets too much for me.
Damien's eyes remain on the road, not even glancing at me.
That's a good thing I guess.
However it slightly frustrates me.
In reply to my statement he nods but doesn't say anything.
"So what exactly is going on?" I ask.
Anything to just make him speak.
"Well you are my fiancée as I am yours."
He answers simply.
My eyes widen as I look at him, "So we're going through with this whole marriage thing.’ Damien takes his eyes off of the road and onto me briefly before reverting his eyes.
"Only to dissuade your father. We will act like we're together to please him and then later on we will figure something out" He clarifies.
I let out a deep breath.
That's way better than what I had thought he meant.
"Of course if you want you can date other people but you will have to be careful with your relationships so no one too important finds out.’ As he says this he looks over at me.
Blushing, I shake my head.
"I don't really date.’ Damien slightly tilts his head at me, almost in a questioning way before he looks away again.
"Neither do I."
The thought for some reason makes me smile and I find myself biting my lip so as to not say anything.
The rest of the drive goes on without much talking.
I try to think of how to converse with him as it might take a good hours drive to get to where he lives.
And I can't sit idly by in so much silence.
I do my best to make small talk here and there but all I get in return are one worded short answers.
I glance out the window, taking in the grassy fields on either side of me.
Looking back to Damien I feel this sudden urge to annoy him.
My childishness wants to come out and ask him if he wants to play ‘I Spy’ but I refrain from doing so.
Instead I settle back down into my seat and out of the corner of my eyes, gaze at him.
Most of the drive goes by like that and before I know it, we turn into a very posh looking neighborhood with its huge mansions, neatly trimmed gardens and expensive cars parked in driveways.
But we pass all those huge manners until they start to get further and further apart.
I keep expecting Damien to turn into one of their driveways but instead he turns onto a small separate road with a fence and gate.
We head down it for a few more moments and then I slowly start to see where we are going.
My mouth drops open at the sight before me and numerous times I glance at Damien and then the house.
He lives here? In the middle of a small clearing with tress covering every side, sits a small quaint home.
I expected an incredibly modern mansion of sorts completely made out of glass and windows.
I mean he does give off that sort of cold meticulous vibe.
The house brings a smile onto my face as I look at the stone and wooden framework of the house with erected pillars, holding the infrastructure intact.
I can even see a chimney billowing out of the slanted roofs.
I guess one should truly never judge a book by their cover.
I never learn from that quote unfortunately and continue to make the same common mistake.
"You live here?"
I find myself asking.
I nearly cringe at my stupid question and just smile as he nods at me again. Content from NôvelDr(a)ma.Org.
All that nodding.
Damien parks the car in the driveway and opens his car door.
I still continue to gaze at the house in awe.
It's like something out of a fairytale.
I snap out of my reverie as Damien stands there, holding the car door open for me.I smile up at him and thank him as I get out of the car.
The both of us head to the other car— which had followed us— where all my stuff lies.
I reach out into the open trunk of the car to grab some of my things, however, Damien stops me and instead hands me over his keys.
"Let yourself in.
I'll grab your stuff? I try to make him let me carry a few things but he still doesn't let me and motions me towards the house.
Finally giving up, I walk towards the entryway and insert the key into the lock.
A smile makes its way onto my face as I take in the interior of the house.
It's that perfect blende of rustic and modern what with the fireplace tucked away in the corner and the light cherry wood, leather sofa creating an appealing contrast against the dark flooring.
I glance up from my surroundings as Damien enters the house.
My mouth goes dry at the sight of him; By now he's taken off his suit jacket and has rolled up the sleeves of his buttoned up shirt till his elbows.
Damien's muscles strain against the flimsy fabric as he tightens his grip on the boxes he's holding.
I gulp but hurriedly avert my gaze.
"Come."
He calls from over his shoulder as he climbs up the stairs.
I follow him wherever he leads me.
The both of us stop in front of a scantily decorated room.
Allit has is a bed, dresser, and wardrobe.
The room itself is painted a light, pretty blue which makes me smile.
As Damien placed the boxes down onto the floor, the other two men come enter into the room right next to me and copy him.
I grin and thank them as they smile back.
I seem to be doing a lot of smiling today.
How odd.
Maybe it's the slight sense of freedom I'm feeling.
"This is your room.Mine is right next to yours. If you need anything, I'll be in the study. It's on the first floor’’ With that he turns to leave but I hurriedly call for him.
"Wait At the sound of my voice he turns to look at me, burying his hands in the pockets of his slacks.
"I just wanted to thank you.Again.I mean you didn't have to do any of this and I'm really grateful for all of this. You're helping me out and you barely even know me.Why?"
I say asking him a question in the end.
Damien merely looks at me before shrugging his shoulders.
Probably wondering why I keep continuously asking him that damn question.
However the act of him shrugging his shoulders leaves me somewhat shocked.
It was So...cavalier.
Not something I'd expect to see from someone all composed and serious at all times.
"I have my reasons."He answers.
My eyebrows furrow at his words.
"And will you be telling me these reasons?"I ask somewhat coyly.
Damien shrugs once again.
"Maybe.In due time."
With that Damien turns to leave and this time I don't stop him.
Hopefully he'll be telling me soon enough.
Though the curiosity leaves me slightly restless, I won't be prying anytime soon.
Slightly afraid of what I'll find.
Curiosity does kill the cat after all.
