The Billionaire’s Ex-Wife (Her Ex-Husband’s Regret) Chapter 40

Kayden.

“Sorry, the number you dialed is temporarily unavailable.”

I must have heard this more than a hundred times.

“Fuck it” 1 fight the urge to throw my phone across the room.

Since I woke up in the hospital. I have called her about a bazillion times. I want to know if she got discharged from the hospital already, if she was okay. I want to know if she had a concussion or just a bruise. Or I simply just want to hear her

voice.

But since last night, I wasn’t able to get ahold of her. I am not sure if I got the wrong number, or she has blocked me.

“Yes, sir?” my secretary says on the other line.

“Find Cassandra Steele for me. Now!”

“Cassandra Steele, sir?” she echoes.

Oh, right! Fuck!

I forgot that when we were married. I specifically kept Cassie hidden. She was only Cassandra Steele on paper. But I made her keep her maiden name in public. Nobody knew her as Cassandra Steele except for the two of us and three other people.

Now, I’m thinking

Cassandra Steele would have been a beautiful name for her. I would be proud to introduce her to other people with that

name.

“Sir

“I mean, Cassie Carlisle.”

“Ummm do you

want

Cassie on the phone, sir?”

“I want to know where she is at this moment! I don’t care how you will find out, but just do it. Or don’t even bother coming

to work tomorrow.”

I hang up the phone. Then I dial Cassie’s number again.

“Sorry, the number you dialed is temporarily unavailable.”

Damn it!

The door opens and Arthur Carlisle enters the room.

“What does he want now?!

I thought I was done with him yesterday when I told him that he owed me nothing anymore. He can keep my investment. I just don’t want anything to do with him and his horrible wife and stepdaughter anymore.

“Why are you here? I thought we concluded things yesterday.”

“Believe me, Kayden, if this is not of importance, I won’t be here

“Very well,” I say, “Tell me.”

“Are you not even going to check on Megan?”

“Why? What happened to her?”

“She almost died today, Kayden!”

“What? Why? What happened?”

“What did you say to her that made her want to end her life?”

“The hell? She attempted suicide?”

I cannot believe it, I have always thought Megan was stronger than that. She was too proud, too absorbed with herself. People like that usually don’t commit suicide.

“You pushed her to the wall, Kayden!” His eyes seem to be teary. I am not sure if those were genuine tears or just part of a

For ploy to appeal to my emotions. “My daughter spent her entire life trying to please you. She’s built her world around you. years, she has trained herself to become a woman who’s fit to stand beside you as your wife! And then you just leave her like that?”

Arthur I tried…”

“How many more of my daughters are you going to play with?” he mutters. “Do you know she found out that you had slept with Cassie? That you’re going to marry Cassie?”

w devastated Megan was when

“If I remember correctly, Arthur, it was your idea that Cassie and I got married. And if I also remember correctly, you benefited a lot from my marriage with your daughter.”

“Yes, but I was not aware that you had already promised Megan that she was going to be your wife soon. Otherwise, I would not have asked you to marry Cassie!”

Right! Because this man has always loved Megan, his stepdaughter, more than Cassie, her biological daughter. I have always found that weird.

“What did you really come here for, Arthur? Are you appealing that I proceed with my wedding plans with Megan?” I ask “Even though I don’t love her?”

“Love is hardly the reason to get married nowadays. Truly, you should know that when you married Cassie.”

“And look where it got us,” I murmur sadly. “I’m not going to make the same mistake twice, Arthur. I cannot marry Megan. I cannot think of a reason good enough to marry her.”

“What about your unborn child, the future heir of Steele Corp?”

I narrow my eyes at him. “What did you say?”

Megan is pregnant,” he says.

No way! She can’t be! It’s impossible!

I cannot remember sleeping with Megan. Except during that time I woke up in my bed, and she was beside me. I was totally wasted, I couldn’t even remember what happened the night before.

I haven’t slept with any woman ever since Cassie left. I was an idiot. I got rid of her, and when she was gone, I realized just how much I craved for her. She was my drug. And if it isn’t her. I just couldn’t get a fix.

Right after she left, I did make an effort to sleep with Megan. But every time I closed my eyes. I kept thinking of Cassie, her scent, the feel of her skin against mine. And then I opened my eyes and see a different face-Megan’s face, and my cock just won’t get the fuck up! I had to make an excuse to Megan, tell her I was sick, or tired.

And then one morning, we woke up and she told me that we slept together. I was wasted. I couldn’t remember. Maybe we did have sex. Maybe my intoxicated brain finally allowed my cock to become rock-hard for another woman.

“I know what a first-born son means to this family, Kayden. You are as precious as precious could be. So, my question is are you going to allow your first-born child to become a bastard? Well, that will be a first in the Steele family tree, won’t it?”

He has a point. The first-born son in this family stands to inherit everything. The next children will, of course, live a rich and comfortable life, but it will be the first-born who will control all the major assets and the businesses of Steele Corp. Just like me.

Will there be a threat or a struggle for power Maybe. But my father never had that with my uncle. As far as I know, my uncle loves me as much as he loves his own son. Well, he’s the black sheep of the family, but still my uncle made sure he lived luxuriously, while he trained me to run the family business when my father died

I stare up at Arthur. He has a satisfied expression on his face. It’s as if, he knew that he got through to me.

Damn it!

In truth, I don’t need to marry Megan. I can just support the child. But if it’s a bor been there for generations? What would that make me?

then how could I break a tradition that’s

I am a hundred percent sure that the public will make a feast of this. The Board may not forgive me for this. My uncle will definitely not allow it.

“A first-born son of the Steele family could never be a bastard, Arthur says. “I may be an outsider to your family, but I know that much.”

Arthur heads for the door. “Well, I will leave you to it. I trust that you have a lot to think about.

He walks towards the door. And before he leaves he says. “I will give you time to decide. I trust that you will decide wise. still have your uncle’s number, you know.”

And then he leaves and closes the door behind him.

I press the skin between my nose. My head feels like

it’s about to split in half.

I really don’t want to marry Megan. But on the other hand, I want that child, I want to be a part of his life from the moment he is born. I don’t want any regrets, like what I felt when I thought Kai was my son. One thing is for sure. I will love and nurture that child.

Then what about Cassie?

The thought of losing her to Sullivan is too much for me to bear But what am I going to do with Megan?

How could I marry the person who lied to me for years? The person who pretended to be someone else, and separated me from the love of my life. If Megan didn’t play with our fates, then I would probably have been happily married to Cassie. I

would have the perfect wife, And I would try my damnedest to be perfect for her.

My phone rings.

“Hello”

“Sir, I just found out where Miss Cassie is.”

“Tell me

I desperately want to hear Cassie’s voice. I want to go to her. See her. I need her! Now more than ever!

“She has just boarded the plane to Las Vegas, Tara says.

“Vegas? What the hell will she do in Las Vegas?”

“I don’t know. Sir. But I was told that Mister Sullivan booked tickets for her, her son and himself at the last minute

“Er. I’m not sure. But usually, people rush tas Vegas to get married, right?”

This time. I really am unable to stop myself. I throw my phone right across the room!
