Chapter 14
If I headed straight to school I would be there far too early so I decided to take a bit of a detour on my way. I walked through the town centre, most of the shops were still closed at this time of the morning but the local coffee shop would be open. That was at least one thing I could rely on, even if the rest of my life had been turned upside down.
The street was a hive of activity as people were getting their shops ready to open in a few hours time. There were delivery vans parked in the streets and people rushing around to offload the stock. I ducked down one of the side streets to keep out of everyone's way.
I weaved through the side streets until I reached the edge of town and the coffee shop I was heading for. It was a lovely family owned coffee shop. Some people might call it hipster in style with its fake rustic aesthetic and quirky elements throughout the shop. I don't normally like this kind of place but as they do the best coffee in town by far I just ignore how pretentious it is.
The bell on the shop door chimed as I walked through drawing the attention of the barista to me. She looked shocked as I walked through the door. That wasn't the way that she normally reacted when I walked in but I ignored it. Maybe she was just concentrating on something else or having a tough morning.
"How can I help you today luna?" She asked.
Oh great, so that was why she looked so shocked to see me here. She expected me to be having breakfast in the alpha's house at the other side of town. How did she know?
I know that gossip travels quickly in a werewolf pack but this was ridiculous. There was nobody around when Elijah spoke to me. Nobody should even know I am his mate unless he told them. So how had word travelled this quickly? So much for having a quiet day today. If the barista knew about what happened then who else knew and how much did they know? Did they hear about what happened after training, what if we weren't as alone as I thought we were. I could feel the blush creeping over my cheeks.
This was all going too fast. It felt as though the whole pack was trying to push me and Elijah together without us even knowing if we wanted that. He still thought of me as a rogue, why would he want a rogue as his luna. More to the point, why did him thinking badly of me hurt so much? I never normally cared what anyone thought about me.
I sighed.
"Hi. Can I have a large latte and a bacon sandwich please?" I decided not to tell her to call me by my name. At this point it was probably futile and I was not caffeinated enough to get into a long debate about it. 'Is it really that bad to be called luna? I don't get why you are acting like this is such a hardship.' Onyx said.
The barista nodded and hurriedly started making my order. I had never seen her move so fast in all the years of me coming here. It made me feel very awkward. After what had happened to my parents I was used to being either ignored completely or insulted by most werewolves. I didn't really know how to handle this kind of attention.
I shifted my weight nervously to my other food and pulled my phone out of my bag. I flicked through my phone pretending to check out my social media account. It made me feel more confident to pretend to be doing something else. My phone almost felt like a shield protecting me from any possible awkward social interactions. People tend not to bother you if they think you are glued to your phone. "Your order is ready luna." She said pulling me away from my thoughts. I really wish she would stop calling me that.

'Heck no, I love it and I will love it even more when we have Elijah's mark on our neck.' Onyx said.
"Thanks, how much do I owe you?" I asked.
"Nothing." She said. I tilted my head, what is that about?
"Errmm, how much is the food?" I asked. Maybe she had misunderstood me.
"I am not going to charge you luna." She said.
"I am not really the luna yet." I said, hoping that she would take the hint and start treating me more normally.
I took a few notes out of my wallet and slid them across the counter towards her. She shook her head and handed the money back to me.
"The alpha has helped my family out so much after my father got killed. He helped us with shifts, paid for our counselling and my sister's degree. Treating his luna to free coffee is really the least I can do." She said. Her tone told me that there was nothing I could say to change her mind.
"Thank-you." I said somewhat awkwardly. I was a bit surprised that our alpha was so active in helping out our community. It seemed as though there was so much I didn't know about Elijah. I always avoided the alpha family as much as possible because I assumed they were all like Felix.
I picked up my sandwich and my coffee.
"My friend works in the kitchen of the alpha's mansion. She told me that the alpha wants to have your luna ceremony on Friday so the whole pack can celebrate afterwards." She said.RêAd lat𝙚St chapters at Novel(D)ra/ma.Org Only
'Yes, yes, yes.' Onyx said, I could feel her excitement and arousal.
"Thank-you." I mumbled, not really knowing what else to say.
I smiled at the barista and turned to leave the coffee shop. She had a huge smile on her face, she was clearly excited. A pack needed a luna and our pack had been without one ever since Elijah took over. The whole pack would be excited about this, not just her. I wish I could say that I was too but right now I was feeling conflicted.
For a luna ceremony to occur on Friday I would have to be marked and mated within the next few days. I couldn't blame him for thinking it would happen that way, most of our kind took that step within hours of meeting their mate. I also couldn't deny that the idea of being by his side felt good but was that safe for me or for him.
I sipped my coffee and nibbled on my sandwich as I walked towards the school building. I had a lot to think about. Finding your mate was always a major adjustment but for me it was more tricky. I had a secret, one that I didn't fully understand yet. How could I start any kind of relationship under these circumstances?
